Thomas Marshall Van Metre

Thomas Marshall Van Metre, 73, of 1415 Winchester Drive, died of natural causes Saturday afternoon while working in his garden.

Van Metre retired in 1989 from Armstrong World Industries after 36 years. He began as a sales representative in the floor division. Later, he had management responsibilities in field offices and sales management and was assigned to marketing, venture management, and new business development and general management posts.

 He served in the US Army during the Korean War.

Van Metre earned an economics degree in 1951 from University of Pennsylvania. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa during his junior year and led his Kappa Sigma fraternity chapter in his senior year.

He was a longtime member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church.

His hobbies and interests included golf, visiting historic sites, reading and traveling. He was a student of music and business affairs.

Born in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of the late Donald Ezra and Jessica Marshall Van Metre.

He was married 47 ago years on Sept. 4 to Rosemary Brown Van Metre.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Amy, wife of Steven Siddal of North Wales; two sons, Steven Van Metre, husband of Mary Stuart Barbour of Roanoke, Va., and James Van Metre, husband of Jackie Lesser of Brooklyn; six grandchildren; and a sister, Nancy Pyle of Timonium Md.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Karen Lynn.
