Robert Lee VanMeter

Robert Lee VanMeter, 71, of Maysville, W.Va., died Saturday, June 11, 2005, at his home.

Mr. VanMeter was born Aug. 27, 1933, in Maysville, and was the son of the late Jeff VanMeter and Dorothy Moyers VanMeter.

He was a member of Lighthouse Community Church. He was chaplain and fireman of the Maysville Volunteer Fire Department for 37 years and was a member of the Ordained Ministry. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War and was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans.

His wife, Oleda Hawk VanMeter, preceded him in death in 1991.

Survivors include two daughters, Carol Heavner of Lahmansville, W.Va. and Dorothy Hawk of Maysville; a stepdaughter, Eleanor Jean Walker of Little Rock, Ark.; three sisters, Ruby Moyers of Meyersdale, Pa., Hazel Nelson of Woodstock and Charlotte Ann Jenkins of Winchester; and five grandchildren.

The Revs. Joseph Eversole and Ken Phares will conduct the funeral 11 a.m. Wednesday at Lighthouse Community Church. Burial will be at the Maysville Cemetery with military honors by the combined veterans organizations of Grant County and the JROTC.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Schaeffer Funeral Home in Petersburg, W.Va.
