MAE BROWN VAN METER 

MAE BROWN VAN METER, 92, of Lynchburg died on October 23, 2002. She was the wife of the late Ellsworth Evans Van Meter, a member of the law firm of Shaffer, Van Meter and Gallucio of Arlington, VA. Mrs. Van Meter graduated from Harrisonburg State Teachers College, now James Madison University, and began her teaching career in 1931 at Washington Lee High School of Arlington, where she became Supervising Principal of the Junior High School. During World War II she operated the Arlington County School Nurseries. Later she became Director of Health Education for the Arlington Tuberculosis Association, where she developed a health education program. In 1948, she was appointed Principal of Patrick Henry Elementary School in Arlington from which she retired in 1959. She was active in a number of civic organizations in Arlington County prior to returning to Lynchburg in 1989.Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m., Sunday, October 27, 2002 from Heritage United Methodist Church, 582 Leesville Road, Lynchburg with Dr. Stephen Hundley officiating. Graveside services will be conducted at 1 p.m., Monday, October 28, 2002 at Columbia Gardens Cemetery in Arlington.
