John Thurman VanMeter

VANMETER,, JOHN THURMAN 86, passed away Tuesday, May 24, 2005. Funeral: 10:00 a.m. Saturday, Ferndale Baptist Church, 1227 Ferndale Avenue, Dallas. Burial: Moore Memorial Gardens, Arlington. Visitation: The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. John Thurman VanMeter was born in Weatherford, Texas on January 20, 1919. He married Nellie Lee Seay on December 12, 1936 in Dallas, Texas. John was preceded in death in 1991 by his beloved wife of 54 years, and by granddaughter, Barbara Kay Ward. During his long career in the construction trades and later as a motor crane operator, he was respected and sought out for his steady hand, precision and knowledge. He was proud that he had been privileged to contribute to the construction of an amazing number of Dallas landmarks and prominent structures. Every child, grandchild and great-grandchild was at one time delighted to see and learn that he erected the famous waterfall billboard on Stemmons at Oak Lawn. John was a giving, kind and gentle man. He touched many lives in small but significant ways. His life was meaningful not only to his family and friends, but to strangers whose lives he touched. Survivors: Daughters, Dorothy Ward, Linda Menefee, and Jo Murrell; and those who knew him as Honey, Grandchildren Tim Frailicks, Jan Sosebee, Joey Frailicks, and Jill Agnew, along with Great-Grandchildren, Mitch, Elise, Skoti, Bret, Ryan, Tyler, Harper and Josephine.
