James M. Van Metre III

LEWISBURG - James Monroe Van Metre III, 84, of Lewisburg died April 22, 1998 at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center after a long illness.

He was born in Martinsburg and was a graduate of West Virginia University with bachelor's and master's degrees in agriculture. He was a member of Old Stone Presbyterian Church, Lewisburg, a charter member of Greenbrier Valley Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution, and recipient of the WVU Distinguished Alumni Award of the College of Agriculture and Forestry.

He was master mason of The Grand Lodge, Triluminar Lodge, Middleway, and a member of the West Virginia Farm Bureau and Alpha Zeta agriculture honorary society. He was a captain in the Army, a retired agricultural extension agent and a 44-year resident of Lewisburg.

Surviving: wife, Wilda Boyd Van Metre; daughters, Sandra V. Judy of Shippensburg, Pa., Julie V. Tate of Ashland, Va., Dorothy V. Covington of Richmond, Va.; son, James M. IV of Lewisburg; sisters, Bessie V. Diffenderfer and Katherine B. Van Metre, both of Martinsburg; brother, I.D. Van Metre Jr. of Martinsburg; six grandchildren.

Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home, Lewisburg, with the Rev. Dexter Taylor officiating. Burial will be in Rosewood Cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
