Helen B. Van Meter

Helen B. Van Meter, beloved mother and grandmother passed away in Las Vegas Jan. 16, 2007. Helen was born in Savanna, Okla., Aug. 14, 1913, and was 93 years old when she went home to her Heavenly Father. She was raised on a farm in Oklahoma, by loving grandparents as both her parents preceded her in death when she was a small child. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Bill Jack Van Meter; and her grandson, Tommy Van Meter. Helen loved farm life and was proud of her Cherokee Indian heritage and her Oklahoma origin. During World War II she worked in an airplane factory, but later began a lifelong career as a waitress in the resort industry as she loved meeting people. She moved to Las Vegas in 1963, and considered it home. She worked as a waitress at the Las Vegas Sands many years during its heyday, i.e. Rat Pack, etc., were her customers. Helen retired in the early 80s and was fond of travel, fishing and rockhounding. She was devoted to her family and lived her life showering them with love. She survived many health issues that no one thought she could. She was one tough lady! She is survived by her daughter, Mary Alice Wiens of Las Vegas; son, William Van Meter of California; grandchildren, Debra Brewer, William K. Smith and Teresa Smith; great-grandchildren, Shanna Sullivan and Michael (Vera) Lane; and her great great-granddaughter, Christiana Lane, all of Las Vegas; as well as her granddaughters, Mavourneen, Heidi and Lily of Hawaii, and their families. We, Helen's family, are grateful for the many years we had with her. A family celebration of her life will be held at a future date.
