Gerald Van Meter

PEORIA - Gerald Van Meter, 75, of 919 W. Inverness, formerly of Streator and Roanoke, died at 11:33 a.m. Saturday, April 7, 2001, at Methodist Medical Center.

Born Aug. 14, 1925, in Grand Ridge to Clarence and Bessie Hammack Van Meter, he married Betty Mennen on May 1, 1949, in Benson. She survives.

Also surviving are one son, Randy of Peoria; one daughter, Sandra (and James) Ross of Princeville; two grandchildren; three greatgrandchildren; two sisters, Velma Gmelich of Ancona and Shirley Carlson of Oneida; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one son, Craig, in 1970; and one sister.

He was a World War II Marine veteran and was a prisoner of war.

He worked at Komatsu in Peoria as a machinist and inspector, retiring in 1991.

He was a member of Clarence E. Baker Masonic Lodge 1114, AF&AM; and Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Peoria.

He was former worshipful master, member and past patron of Washington Order of Eastern Star.

He was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in rural Benson, where services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday. The Rev. Peter Reuss will officiate. Visitation will be one hour before services at the church. Burial will be in St. Peter's Lutheran Church Cemetery in rural Benson. Remmert Funeral Home in East Peoria is in charge of arrangements.
