George "Neighbor" Van Metre

A retired employee of Shell Oil Co. and a resident of Gonzales, he died at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, March 26, 1998, at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center. He was 79 and a native of Vinton. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Visiting at Welsh Funeral Home, Gonzales, 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and 8:30 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. Saturday. Masonic services at the funeral home at 7 p.m. Friday.

Religious services at First Baptist Church at 10 a.m. Saturday, conducted by the Rev. James Law. Interment in Lusk Cemetery. Survived by wife, Lillian G. Van Metre; a daughter and son-in-law, Dana V. and Steven Marcantel, Gonzales; a son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Peggy Van Metre, Prairieville; four sisters, Betty Hudson, Vinton, Alice East, Sulphur, Mary Powell, South Carolina, and Norene Minchew, Brazoria, Texas; three brothers, Harvey Van Metre, Denbigh, Va., Charles T. Van Metre Jr.,Vinton, and Jack Van Metre, Vidor, Texas; and three grandsons, Joey Van Metre, Michael Van Metre and Brandon Marcantel. Preceded in death by parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles T. Van Metre Sr.; a brother, Ernest Van Metre; and a sister, Lula Bagwell.

He was a member of New River Masonic Lodge, First Baptist Church, Gonzales, and 88 Hunting Club.
