Donald L. VanMeter

Donald L. VanMeter, 65, of Olathe, KS, passed away at his home on Sunday, April 14, 2002, with his family at his bedside, of ALS. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 17, 2002, at the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 143rd & Blackbob Rd., 913-768-6777. Cremation. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions be made to the Keith Worthington ALS Association, 8340 Mission Rd., Suite B4, Prairie Village, KS 66206, and/or Heartland Hospice.

Donald was born in Petersburg, WV, June 27, 1936, to Willard and Garrett VanMeter. He served in the USAF from 1954-1958. He came to the Kansas City area in 1976, and worked at Meyer Lumber Company from 1976-1990. He retired from the Department of Treasury in 2000. He was preceded in death by his father, Garrett VanMeter. He leaves his wife, Joyce VanMeter, of the home, two sons, Mark and wife Miryan VanMeter of Tampa, FL, and Kevin and wife Terri Tawzer of Wichita, KS, four daughters, Sheri and husband George Rawlings of Independence, MO, Donna and husband Bruce Hursttman of Bates City, MO, Marjorie and husband Tom TawzerOverbeck, Wellington, CO, Candace Tawzer of Osage City, KS, his mother, Willard VanMeter of Petersburg, WV, three brothers, Gary VanMeter of Fort Worth, TX, Ed VanMeter of Petersburg, WV, and George and wife Susan VanMeter of Fort Collins, CO, 13 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

  Donald L. VanMeter, 65, of Olathe, Kansas, and formerly of Petersburg, died April 14, 2002 at his home from ALS.

Born June 27, 1936, in Petersburg, he was the son of Willard VanMeter of Petersburg and the late Garrett VanMeter.

Besides his mother, he is survived by his wife, Joyce VanMeter; two sons, Mark VanMeter of Tampa, Fla. and Kevin Tawzer of Wichita, Kansas; four daughters, Sheri Rawlings of Independence, Mo., Donna Hursttman of Bates City, Mo., Marjorie Tawzer-Overbeck of Wellington, Colo. and Candace Tawzer of Osage City, Kansas; three brothers, Gary Van Meter of Fort Worth, Texas, Ed VanMeter of Petersburg and George VanMeter of Fort Collins, Colo.; 13 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

At his request, his body was cremated.

A Celebration of Life service was April 17, at the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home chapel.
