Dean Frederick Van Metre

DEAN FREDERICK VAN METRE A loving husband, father, grandfather and friend died on April 14, 2005, at his home in Oakmont (Santa Rosa) at the age of 78. Dorothy, his wife of 52 years, preceded him in death in May 2004. Dean is survived by his wonderful family: son Mark and his wife, Debra, and their sons, Matthew, John and Andrew; his son Michael and his wife, Sondra, and their sons, Ian and Spencer; and his daughter, Mary Gospe, and her husband, Michael, and their sons, Sean and Zachary. Also surviving Dean are his brother Marvin and his wife, Jean, and his sister Dolores and her husband, Jack Dolley. A native of Clemons, Iowa, Dean attended Iowa State University briefly before enlisting in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He served as a musician and was honorably discharged in 1946. Dean earned a graduate degree in hospital administration from the University of Iowa. He retired as CEO of St. Rose Hospital in Hayward, Calif., in 1988 after 28 years of distinguished service. Dean was active in the California Hospital Association, California Association of Catholic Hospitals (serving as president) and the Catholic Health Association (serving as chairperson for the CHA Board of Trustees). He was also active in the Hayward Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club. An avid sports and jazz fan, Dean loved to play tennis, golf and dominos. He was captain of his houseboat where he enjoyed many summers in the company of family and friends. The consummate gentleman and friend, he will be missed for his warmth, love and great sense of humor. A memorial service will be held at Star of the Valley Catholic Church in Santa Rosa (Oakmont) on April 28, 2005, at 11 a.m.
