Claude Blackburn Vanmeter
Claude Blackburn Vanmeter, 78, died Friday, Aug. 11, 2000, at home.
Funeral: 10 a.m. Monday at St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church, 1200 S. Davis
Drive in Arlington. Visitation: Family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday
at Moore and Sons Funeral Home, 1219 N. Davis Drive in Arlington.
Claude Vanmeter was born on Oct. 18, 1921, in Bordeaux, France, the only child
of Samuel L. and Marquetite J. Blackburn. Leaving France during World War II,
Mrs. Vanmeter and her parents settled in Texas, her father's home. She was a
graduate of Centenary College in Louisiana and a member of Chi Omega sorority.
Claude served as an Executive Secretary in the aerospace industry for 25 years
with Chance Vought, LTV and Aerospatiale.
In 1981, Mrs. Vanmeter was selected as Secretary of the Year. As an expert
translator of French, she was responsible for translating the aerospace
chronicle of the helicopter entitled "Hisory of the Helicopter" by Jewan Boulet,
published in 1982. Claude was an active member of AARP and an avid bridge
player.
Mrs. Vanmeter was preceded in death by her beloved son, Robert, and husbands,
Lewis Ola, Ed Dawson and Elbert "Van" Vanmeter. Survivors: Son, Philip Ola;
daughter-in-law, Patty Ola; stepson Richard Dawson; and grandsons, Robert and
