Catheryn Sophia Van Meter
OGDEN -- Catheryn Sophia McRae Van Meter died Wednesday, October 17, 2001 at
the age of 98.
She was born October 3, 1903 in Miles City, MT, the daughter of William Walter
and Mabel Earnest McRae.
She attended the University of Montana, receiving a BA in 1925 and an MA in
1948. She was employed as a Student Instructor at Montana State University; a
teacher in Dallas, Oregon, and Island Park, Idaho, and a counselor at the
University of Montana. She was employed as Counselor at Ben Lomond High School
in Ogden from 1954 to 1969.
In September, 1926 she married Thomas Hart Van Meter. Catheryn and Tom
celebrated their fiftieth anniversary before his death.
With her husband in the Forest Service, Catheryn and Tom moved frequently; and
after both retired, traveled extensively with the Good Sam Club and Airstream
Trailer Caravans.
During her lifetime, Catheryn was an avid bridge player, playing her last game
of bridge two weeks ago.
She was a member of Chapter P.PEO, Utah and was honored as a Golden Girl for her
fiftieth anniversary as a PEO member. She served as branch and State President
of Idaho AAUW, was Chairman of American College Personnel Association of Utah,
President of Utah Counselors Association, and President of Utah Deans and Women
and Counselors. She was a member of YWCA, Gray Lady of the American Red Cross,
Bonneville Chapter, Forest Service Pine Tree Club, and the Bertha Eccles Art
Center. She had a continuing interest in improving educational opportunities for
women.
She is survived by her son, Thomas R. and wife Kathy; three grandchildren: Karen
(Leonard), Thomas E. and Mary (Su) and five great grandchildren: Joseph,
Terence, Kathleen, and Sarah Leonard and Gregory Su. She was preceded in death
by her husband and her sister, Frances McRae Seaman of Mt. Vernon, Washington.
The funeral service will be at Larkin Mortuary at 10 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 22,
2001. Friends may call at the mortuary Monday from 9 to 9:45 a.m.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to the PEO Educational Fund c/o
Cottey Junior College in memory of Catheryn Van Meter; c/o Carolyn Gilstrap,
State Tres., PEO 1650 E. 12500 So., Draper, UT 84020.
