Beatrice (Smyth) Van Meter

Beatrice "Betty" Smyth Van Meter, 90, of Lafayette, died at 8:06 p.m. Monday, Nov. 14, 2005, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center.

Born Jan. 21, 1915, in Shelburn, she was a graduate of Shelburn High School and had resided in Lafayette for the past 50 years.

She married Leon Van Meter on May 22, 1934, in Vincennes, and he preceded her on April 20, 1999.

Mrs. Van Meter was the head waitress at Lafayette Country Club for 15 years, retiring in 1978. She had also owned several businesses in southern Indiana.

She was a member of the Baptist Church in Delphi.

Mrs. Van Meter enjoyed crocheting, traveling, camping and puzzle books.

Surviving are two sons, Arlis "Archie" Van Meter (wife: Jackie) and James Leon Van Meter (wife: Connie) of Carlisle; and three daughters, Sulan Sanford (husband: James "J.R.") and Nance L. Marshall (husband: Elmer), both of Lafayette, and RaDel Brummett (husband: Larry) of West Point.
