ALFRED C. "DOC" VAN METER 

VAN METER, ALFRED C. "DOC", Farmer, 75, of Hopewell Township died on Wednesday morning at Martin Memorial Hospital - South in Stuart, Florida. He had been in declining health and had been hospitalized for the last few days.

The husband of Jane (nee Johnson) VanMeter, he was born in Bridgeton and was a lifelong Hopewell Township resident. He was the son of the late Eli D. and Edna Richards VanMeter.

Mr. Van Meter was a vegetable farmer for most of his life and he owned and operated VanMeter Farms in Hopewell Township. For the past eleven years, he was a winter resident of Stuart, Florida.

He was a member of the Cumberland County Board of Agriculture and the NJ Farm Bureau. In addition, he was a member of the Board of Directors of Agway and a member of the Friesburg Lutheran Church. He enjoyed hunting, snowmobiling and was a longtime fan of NASCAR.

In addition to his wife of over fifty years he is survived by one son, Alfred C. "Fred" VanMeter Jr., two grandchildren, Tim VanMeter and Jessica VanMeter and one brother, George H. VanMeter of Pennsville. He was predeceased by a sister, Marion Halter.

Funeral services will be held on Monday morning at 11 o'clock at the Freitag Funeral Home, 137 W. Commerce St., with Rev. Edgar Wiker, pastor of the Friesburg Lutheran Church officiating. The interment will be made at Fernwood Memorial Park in Hopewell Township. Friends will be received at the funeral home on Monday morning between 9 and 11.

Memorial contributions may be made in Mr. VanMeter's memory in lieu of flowers to West Cumberland Little League, c/o 61 Minches Corner Road, Bridgeton, N.J. 08302.
